Key Takeaways

Connect Instrumentl to ChatGPT or Claude to work from your live grant matches, pipeline, and budgets, and save updates straight back to your account.

You can now connect your Instrumentl account to ChatGPT via our free, public MCP Server.

The ChatGPT plugin joins the  Instrumentl Claude connector, live since June. Now, you can work from your live grant data in whichever assistant your team prefers.

Both run on the same secure connection, built on MCP (the open standard that lets AI assistants plug into the tools you already use).

Most grant pros use AI. Few trust what it says.

So much of grant work lives in siloed systems and spreadsheets, and grant professionals are the glue holding it together. AI can take much of that off your plate by connecting your systems and automating the routine, copy-paste parts of the job.

Most grant pros have already started. In Instrumentl's 2026 survey on AI and grant work, 70% said they use AI regularly. But 69% said they aren't confident that what AI gives them is accurate, and they’re right to be cautious.

AI is only as reliable as the context it can access

An AI assistant answers from whatever information it can reach.

When that information is incomplete, outdated, or unverified, the answer can still sound convincing, even when it's wrong.

Take grant research, where accuracy questions come up most. Ask ChatGPT:

"We have a food security program in Atlanta, Georgia. Are there any open grants we should explore?"

You'll likely get a confident answer, with named funders, plausible-looking opportunities, and deadlines.

But when an AI assistant relies on open web search, it's working from information that may be outdated, conflicting, or unverified.

And it knows nothing about your programs, your eligibility, your past applications, or your current pipeline.

Grant pros have told us they've seen AI recommend opportunities that are already closed and funders that don't even exist. They've seen grants that look relevant on the surface but aren't actually a strong fit.

What changes when AI works from Instrumentl, your grants system of record

Now imagine that same assistant could securely consult Instrumentl, your system of record for grants. It would know your actual pipeline, upcoming deadlines, saved opportunities, and best-fit matches.

It's no longer answering from the open internet. It's grounding its response in your organization's current data and in Instrumentl's curated, human-verified grant and funder database.

That changes the question from: "What grants might exist for an organization like mine?"

To: "Of the verified opportunities in our Instrumentl project, which best fit this program, and which should we prioritize given our current pipeline?"

One gives you a plausible answer. The other gives you a grounded one you can trace back to the source, evaluate, and act on.

AI doesn't replace your system of record. It gets far more useful when it works from one.

What ChatGPT and Claude can access in Instrumentl

More than 6,000 nonprofits use Instrumentl to run their grants practice across the full lifecycle. And when you connect your Instrumentl account to ChatGPT or Claude through our free, public MCP server, your AI assistant can work from:

  • Vetted grant matches, scoped to your projects and drawn from 35,000+ active grants, 450,000 funder profiles, and 10+ years of funder data (all human-verified) so research starts from real, open opportunities.
  • Your live pipeline: every saved grant, its status, amounts requested and awarded, and owner.
  • Upcoming deadlines and tasks for proposals, reports, and awards: what's due, what's overdue, and who owns it.
  • Budget vs. actuals for awarded grants, by category, so you can see what's drifting before the report is due.

Don't just ask about your grants. Update them.

Many AI integrations are read-only: they can see your data but can't act on it.

The Instrumentl connection works both ways.

Pull your matches, then save the strong fits to your tracker. Check a deadline, then assign the next round of tasks. Log a planned expense and preview its budget impact before anything commits.

A few things you can ask ChatGPT today:

  • "For our literacy program, show me the top 25 recommended matches"
  • "Save the top three to our tracker and add a research task for each, due Thursday."
  • "We were awarded $50,000 from Hewlett for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Update the tracker."
  • "Which awarded grants are underspending with less than three months left?"

When you ask ChatGPT to act, the change lands in Instrumentl, where the rest of your grant work lives.

There's no logging in and no double entry. Instrumentl stays your up-to-date source of truth, wherever you're working.

The real story: grant work, without the busywork

What Instrumentl built isn't the most interesting part. It’s what grant pros have built on top of their system of record since June.

They're stacking Instrumentl alongside their calendar, email, and team chat to summarize the week and automate routine work. They use it to make strategic calls faster. A few examples:

  • A consultant who taught AI his own disqualification criteria, turning 100+ matches into a vetted shortlist.
  • A grants manager who got a go/no-go answer on a $250K capital project before his meeting ended.
  • A grants director whose weekly look-ahead builds itself every Sunday night.
  • A development leader who tracks 100 grants and shifting government contracts from one dashboard.
  • A new grants coordinator who reconciled two disagreeing systems into one trusted record.

Over the next few weeks, we'll share these workflows each week, with the exact prompts, so you can steal them and make them your own.

  3. Ask your first question: "What grant deadlines and reports are due this week in my tracker?"

Is my grant data secure?

You stay in control. You authorize the connection with your own Instrumentl login, and it's scoped to the permissions you already have. ChatGPT and Claude never see your password, and you can disconnect anytime.

Instrumentl does not use your data to train AI models. Whether your AI provider does depends on your plan:

  • Business and enterprise plans (ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu; Claude Team, Enterprise): conversations aren't used for training.
  • Personal plans (ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro; Claude Free, Pro, Max): conversations are used for training unless you opt out.
    • In ChatGPT: Settings → Data Controls → turn off "Improve the model for everyone."
    • In Claude: Settings → Privacy → turn off "Help improve Claude."
