A disengaged board is not only unhelpful, but can also become a liability when tough decisions arise and trust hasn’t been built.
Start by redefining what board engagement actually looks like—not just attending meetings, but actively shaping the organization’s direction and reach.

The Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) recently analyzed thousands of nonprofit surveys to understand how foundations seek and respond to feedback. The results reveal a troubling gap:
Here’s what CEP found:
This disconnect matters. Stronger listening leads to stronger relationships, and ultimately, stronger funding outcomes. But too often, nonprofits feel their voices don’t lead to meaningful change.
That’s why building and maintaining authentic funder relationships is one of the most important investments you can make. The key is consistent, two-way communication. Keeping funders updated on progress between reports, seeking feedback at multiple stages, and engaging program officers as partners (not just gatekeepers) can increase your chances of long-term success.
